Angiography

What is it?

An X-ray exam of the arteries and veins to diagnose blockages and other blood vessel problems; uses a catheter to enter the blood vessel and a contrast agent (X-ray dye) to make the artery or vein visible on the X-ray.

What to expect

A patient will be at the hospital for a number of hours, usually between four and eight hours for this exam. A patient will not be able to drive themselves home from the hospitals. Refrain from heavy lifting for at least a couple of days.

Preparation

Patients are usually asked to drink a lot of fluids both before and after the angiogram to help flush the dye through the kidneys.
