Barium Enema

What is it?

Exam used to study the colon where a tube is placed in the rectum and liquid runs through the tube and into the colon. A radiologist the watches the progression of the liquid on a TV monitor to detect any sign of cancer, narrowings or obstructions.

What to expect

A patient will be able to drive home after the exam with no special restrictions.


Preparation

Pre-procedure can vary from hospital to hospital, but normally about 48 to 72 hours before the exam a patient is asked to take a laxative and follow with a special liquid diet. On the day of the exam usually only small amounts of liquids are allowed.
