| Types of Diagnostic Imaging (Imaging Modality) X-ray The oldest and most common use of ionizing radiation for various imaging applications. Ultrasound An imaging technique which employs the use of high frequency ultrasound waves for both imaging and doppler examinations for various applications. Nuclear Medicine Unique imaging procedure that documents organfunction and structure. Very small amounts of radioactive materials or radiopharmaceuticals are used to diagnose and treat disease. Radiopharmaceuticals are substances that are attracted to specific organs, bones, or tissues. The radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine emit gamma rays that can be detected externally by special types of cameras: gamma or PET cameras. Mammography It is a sensitive radiographic technique for detecting malignant disease of the breasts. Fluoroscopy Is a basic radiological tool in imaging practice. Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) Is a clinically proven and precise method of measuring bone mineral density (BMD). A key tool in assessing osteoporosis and other disease states characterized by abnormal BMD as well as estimating risk of fracture. Computed Tomography(CT) A well accepted and established imaging technique which utilises ionizing radiation to obtain cross sectional images. Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) A cross sectional imaging method based on aninteraction between radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and certain nuclei in the body after the body has been placed in a strong magnetic field. Interventional Radiology Radiologists using imaging modalities to guide invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. |
